Petrol, diesel prices up by 80 paise; total increase now stands at Rs 6.40

Petrol and diesel prices were on Thursday hiked by 80 paise a litre each, taking the total increase in rates in the last 10 days to Rs 6.40 per litre. Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 101.81 per litre as against Rs 101.01 previously while diesel rates have gone up from Rs 92.27 per litre to Rs 93.07, according to a price notification of state fuel retailers. Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending upon the incidence of local taxation. This is the ninth increase in prices since the ending of a four-and-half-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22. In all, petrol and diesel prices have gone up by Rs 6.40 per litre each.

Massive fire breaks out at Ghazipur landfill site; Gopal Rai demands report

A massive fire broke out at the dumping yard of east Delhi’s Ghazipur area on Monday leading to a huge cloud of smoke enveloping the region and neighboring areas. Nine fire tenders are at the spot to bring the blaze under control, an official of the fire department said. Chief Fire Officer Atul Garg said efforts are on to douse the flames, adding that it may take a few more hours. Merger boost: Inox Leisure zooms 20%, hits record high; PVR jumps 10%

Shares of PVR and Inox Leisure zoomed up to 20 percent on the BSE in Monday's intra-day trade after they announced a merger between the two major multiplex owners, in an all-stock amalgamation of Inox with PVR. Shareholders of Inox will receive three shares of PVR in exchange for 10 shares in Inox. In trades so far, Inox Leisure hit a record high of Rs 563.60, zooming 20 percent in intra-day trade. Google has initiated air raid alerts for Android users in Ukraine directly on their phones before expected attacks happen near them. At the request, and with the help, of the government of Ukraine, Google has started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine. "This work is supplemental to the country's existing air raid alert systems, and based on alerts already being delivered by the Ukrainian government," said Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs at Google. World Bank approves $723 mn loans, grants for Ukraine amid Russia invasion

The World Bank said its executive board on Monday approved a $723 million package of loans and grants for Ukraine, providing government budget support as the country battles a Russian invasion. The package includes a $350 million loan supplement to a prior World Bank loan, augmented by about $139 million through guarantees from the Netherlands and Sweden, the bank said in a statement. The package also includes $134 million in grants from Britain, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and Iceland, as well as parallel financing of $100 million from Japan.

Govt panel allows phase-3 trial of Covovax as booster dose in adults

An expert panel of India's central drug authority has recommended permission for conducting a phase-3 clinical trial of Covid vaccine Covovax as a booster dose in adults, official sources said on Sunday. The Drugs Controller General Of India (DCGI) has already approved Covovax for restricted use in emergencies in adults on December 28. It is yet to be included in the country's inoculation programme. Delhi records 326 Covid-19 cases, three deaths; positivity rate 0.77%

Delhi on Thursday reported 326 fresh COVID-19 cases and three deaths, while the positivity rate stood at 0.77 percent, according to data shared by the city health department. With this, the national capital's case count increased to 18,60,887, while the death toll mounted to 26,130, the latest health bulletin stated. The number of COVID-19 tests conducted a day ago stood at 42,542, it said. Delhi had on Wednesday recorded 325 cases with a positivity rate of 0.81 percent and one death. The number of daily cases in Delhi has been on the decline after touching the record high of 28,867 on January 13. The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 percent on January 14, the highest during the ongoing wave of the pandemic.
